Gruyère, Bacon, and Tomato Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Brian Beaugureau August 8, 2023

Enjoy your homemade Gruyère, Bacon, and Tomato Grilled Cheese Sandwich – a perfect treat for National Sandwich Month or any time you're craving a delightful and savory meal!

Makes 2 sandwiches:

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread

  • 8 ounces (about 225g) Gruyère cheese, sliced

  • 8 slices of cooked bacon

  • 1 large tomato, sliced

  • Butter, softened

  • Mayonnaise

Instructions:

  1. Prep Your Ingredients:

    • Start by cooking the bacon until it's crispy. Set it aside on paper towels to drain excess grease.

    • Slice the Gruyère cheese and tomato. Set aside.

  2. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Lay out 4 slices of sourdough bread on a clean surface.

    • Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice.

  3. Layer the Fillings:

    • On the non-mayo side of two bread slices, layer the Gruyère cheese evenly.

    • Follow by placing 2 slices of cooked bacon on top of the cheese.

    • Add tomato slices over the bacon.

  4. Create the Sandwich:

    • Place the remaining slices of bread, mayo-side up, on top of the fillings to complete the sandwich.

  5. Butter and Grill:

    • Lightly butter the skillet.

    • Heat a skillet or pan over medium heat.

  6. Grill the Sandwich:

    • Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

    • You can use a lid or cover the skillet with foil to help the cheese melt faster.

  7. Serve and Enjoy:

    • Once the sandwiches are grilled to perfection, remove them from the skillet.

    • Allow them to cool for a minute before slicing.

    • Serve the Gruyère, Bacon, and Tomato Grilled Sandwich with your favorite side or dipping sauce.

Optional: For an extra layer of flavor, you can add a touch of Dijon mustard to the inside of the sandwich before grilling.
